How to Choose the Right Roof Access System for Your Building

Roof Access Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

Choosing a roof access system isn’t just about finding the cheapest ladder or hatch grab bars. Safety, security, compliance, and long-term performance all play critical roles. Before you buy, make sure you’re choosing a system designed to protect both your people and your building.

1. Start with Safety

Understand the OSHA Requirements for Your Building

Before you choose a system, identify the specific OSHA regulations that apply to your building type and access needs.

Requirements can vary depending on factors like:

  • Height of the roof

  • Distance to the roof edge

  • Type of ladder or hatch involved

Buying without knowing the correct OSHA codes could leave you non-compliant, liable and with an expensive OSHA fine.

2. Consider Your Building Needs

Every building is different. Choose a system based on your structure's specific features:

  • Flat Roofs:

    • Does the building have a parapet?

      • How tall is the parapet?

      • How wide is the parapet?

      • Are there any obstructions near the parapet?

  • Overhangs:

    • Is the overhang solid?

    • How far from the building does it extend?

  • Gutters:

    • What is the width and height of the gutter?

  • Obstructions:

    • Are there windows where you want to install a ladder?

    • Are there wires, conduit, or lighting that could block ladder placement?

   Roof Hatches:

  • Is it located within 10 feet of the roof edge?

  • Is it too far from the equipment requiring maintenance?

  • Can you ensure personnel and contractors will keep the hatch closed while working on the roof?

3. Plan for Durability and Longevity

Material matters when it comes to rooftop safety equipment.

  • Steel vs. fiberglass vs. aluminum — each has different strengths.

  • Choose a system designed to withstand UV exposure, extreme temperatures, and potential vandalism.

4. Think About Security

Unsecured roof access is an invitation for trouble.

  • Open access fixed ladders are vandalism magnets.

  • A fixed ladder with a gate can be just as dangerous as no protection at all, if is left unlocked.

5. Cost Isn’t Just the Purchase Price

The cheapest option today could end up costing you far more tomorrow.

The wrong roof access system can result in:

  • Roof repairs

  • Building repairs

  • Costly OSHA Violations

  • Insurance claims

  • Worker injuries

  • Liability lawsuits

Invest in a complete system that protects people and property — it’s a smarter, safer, and more cost-effective choice.
